Best overall tube compressor
COMP.TWO is a faithful emulation of the German-built hardware by Rockruepel, an all-tube vari-mu design with no transistor stages anywhere in the circuit. Not strictly vari-mu, it's an optical compressor with a tube gain stage but it belongs in any tube compressor conversation because of what it does to a voice.

FAQ
What does vari-mu actually mean? "Variable mu" refers to the tube's variable amplification factor (μ). As the control voltage changes, the tube's gain changes, so the compression happens inside the amplifying device itself, not in a separate gain-reduction element. The practical result: the more you compress, the more the ratio increases, and the whole thing behaves less like a fader and more like a room.
Is a tube compressor good for the mix bus? It's arguably what they're for. Vari-mu circuits are program-dependent and relatively slow, which means they respond to the shape of a mix rather than individual transients. That's what "glue" describes. Just watch your gain reduction, 1 to 3 dB is usually the whole conversation.
Why would I use a compressor in Amp Only mode? Because the transformers and tubes are doing something to the harmonics before a single dB is reduced. Sowter iron adds low-end weight and gentle saturation. Running COMP.TWO's Amp Only mode gives you that colour with zero dynamic processing, useful on sources that are already compressed enough.
Should I sidechain high-pass a bus compressor? Almost always. Kick and bass energy dominates a full-range detector, so the compressor pumps to the low end and the rest of the mix goes with it.
