Most producers understand threshold and ratio. Attack and release are where it falls apart, because they're about time, and time is hard to hear until someone shows you what to listen for. But these two controls are the difference between compression that kills a track and compression that brings it to life.

What a compressor actually does

A compressor turns down loud sounds. That's it. Threshold sets the level where it starts working, ratio sets how hard it clamps down. But when it turns down and when it lets go, that's attack and release, and that's where the magic and the misery live.

Attack: how fast the compressor grabs

A fast attack clamps down the instant the sound crosses the threshold, catching the transient (the initial punch of a hit). A slow attack lets that transient through before the compressor reacts.

Here's the counterintuitive part that trips everyone up: a slow attack keeps punch, because it lets the transient snap through untouched. A fast attack softens punch, because it grabs the transient itself. Want a drum to hit harder? Slow the attack down so the initial crack survives. Want to tame something aggressive? Speed it up.

Release: how fast the compressor lets go

Release sets how quickly the compressor returns to zero after the sound drops below the threshold. Too fast and you get distortion and pumping. Too slow and the compressor never recovers, so it's always clamped down and the track loses life.

The sweet spot: set the release so the compressor "breathes" with the music. On a rhythmic part, time the release so it recovers just before the next hit. You should feel the track pulse with the groove, not fight it.

How to dial it in by ear

  1. Set a strong ratio and pull the threshold down so you're hearing obvious compression.
  2. Sweep the attack. Listen to the punch appear and disappear. Find where the transient sounds right.
  3. Sweep the release. Listen for pumping when it's too fast and lifelessness when it's too slow. Find where it breathes with the tempo.
  4. Now ease the threshold back up to a musical amount of gain reduction, often just a few dB.
