A classical recording mixed with its full natural dynamic range does not survive modern listening. Play it in a car and the quiet passages disappear under engine noise. Play it in a streaming playlist and it sits noticeably quieter than everything around it. Turn it up to hear the opening and the climax becomes painful.

This is the central problem in mixing any piece written with genuine orchestral dynamics, and it was the governing constraint on Yvette Young's 3 Pieces for Strings and Guitar.

Understand the actual problem

The issue is not peak level. It is the ratio between the quietest and loudest passages, sometimes called macro dynamics.

Fab Dupont frames it concretely: mixed like a classical piece, the quiet sections would sit around minus 25, and nobody driving a car would hear them. Streaming loudness normalisation compounds this, because a track with a low integrated loudness will be turned up as a whole, but the relationship between its quiet and loud sections stays exactly as wide as you left it.

His word for the solution is corseting: shaping the piece so the quiet parts still hang together and the loud parts do not get squashed.

Separate tone finding from balance

A useful distinction from this session: most of what happens during editing and overdubs is tone finding, not mixing. Choosing distortion character, delay behaviour, saturation curves. By the time you reach the mix proper, tone should largely be settled, and the job becomes balance.

Keeping those two phases separate stops you from solving a balance problem with an EQ move, which is where mixes go wrong.

Practical approaches to macro dynamics

Ride the arc, do not just compress it. Automation across sections is more musical than a compressor working across the whole piece, because you can decide where the range gets narrowed and where it stays.

Get the performance to help you. During percussion overdubs, Fab explicitly asked the player to shape her own arc: "don't forget to leave yourself room to grow. I can help with faders later, but it's better if it comes from you as the interpreter." A performance that builds naturally needs far less compression than one that arrives fully loud.

Protect the contrast that matters. Not all dynamic range is equally important. The moment before a climax is worth preserving. A slightly quieter inner passage may not be.

Balancing a main array against spot mics

For an orchestra recorded with both a main array and section spot mics, most balance decisions are really decisions about which system leads at a given moment. The array carries blend and depth. The spots carry presence and definition.

Low voices usually need help. On this recording the arrangement drove the upper strings hard, so cellos and basses needed real presence from their spot mics to hold their ground under the violins.

Place added instruments in the same room

Overdubs recorded elsewhere will not sit in the same acoustic as an orchestra recorded live. On this record, the percussion was bused together and sent through a room emulation so it could be placed in a space comparable to the strings, rather than sitting on top of them. The same treatment was considered for the guitar.

Matching space is often more convincing than matching tone.

The goal

The finished piece has to work in a hall, in a car, and in a playlist. That is not a compromise of the composition, it is the practical condition of releasing music now.
