Puremix Mixing Contest: Mix Like a Pro

Learn, Compete & Level Up Your Mixes

Ever wished you could mix the same song as a Grammy-winning engineer, originally performed by a professional band, and then get feedback from them live?

Welcome to the Puremix Mixing Contests, the most hands-on, ear-opening learning experience in the audio world, featuring multitracks that are professionally recorded in a studio setting.

What Are Puremix Mixing Contests?

Puremix Mixing Contests are exclusive events for Puremix Pro members, built around a real professional session produced by top industry professionals and featured in a Puremix Pro series, such as Inside The Mix or Start To Finish.

That means you’re not just downloading random stems, you’re mixing songs that have been produced and mixed by world-class engineers inside a Puremix tutorial. You get the same files, the same creative challenge, and a front-row seat to compare your mix with the pros.

These contests are designed for mixers of all experience levels, from amateurs to semi-pros, offering a supportive environment for skill development and community engagement.

How to Participate in a Puremix Mixing Contest

Step 1: Download the Original Multitracks

When a contest launches, Puremix Pro members can download the official multitracks from the featured song, professionally recorded in a studio setting.

These are the same files used in the mentor’s session, drums, vocals, guitars, synths, everything. These tracks were recorded using high-end microphones and preamps in a professional studio.

After downloading, you can create your own unique mix or remix of the song by assembling a personalized version from the multitracks.

It’s your chance to step into the mentor’s shoes and see how far your mix can go with the same raw material.

Step 2: Mix It Your Way

You’ll have a limited time to craft your version of the song and upload it to the contest page.

There are no plugin or gear limitations, it’s all about taste, balance, and emotion. Just keep a few ground rules in mind:

  • Don’t change the tempo, key, or arrangement.

  • Don’t mute main elements (especially vocals, drums, or bass).

  • Don’t re-upload the mentor’s original mix (yes, people have tried).

  • Louder doesn’t mean better, all mixes are level-matched before judging.

While the main focus is mixing, participants are also encouraged to remix or produce creative versions of the track, as long as they follow the contest guidelines.

If you want a guide, the Puremix LUFS Analyzer can help you hit a clean final level. Mastering is the next step after mixing to achieve a polished, professional sound.

Step 3: Share, Listen & Get Feedback

Once your mix is live, the fun really begins.
You can listen to other members’ mixes, and as a member, you can also join the exclusive Puremix Facebook group to connect with others, share feedback, and receive comments on your own.

This peer review stage is one of the most valuable parts of the process, you’ll quickly hear how differently others approach the same track, which sharpens your own critical listening.

Staying in touch with the community helps you grow and stay motivated.

Step 4: The Livestream with a Grammy-Winning Mentor

After submissions close, one of our Puremix mentors, a Grammy-winning engineer like Fab Dupont, Andrew Scheps, or Vance Powell, hosts a live review session.

During the livestream, the mentor:

  • Listens to 10 standout mixes from the contest.

  • Gives detailed, constructive feedback on each.

  • Announces the 3 winning mixes live on stream, along with exclusive prizes for the winners, which may include cash awards and high-end preamps.

Winners are determined based on the mentor's criteria and feedback, ensuring a fair and transparent selection process.

It’s both a mix critique and a masterclass, packed with real-world insights that improve your craft instantly.

The prizes are usually professional plugins, helping winners level up their setup and bring their mixes even closer to a world-class sound.

Now it’s time to talk seriously… well, as seriously as anyone holding a cup of coffee at 2 a.m. can.

Mixing is an art form, and the winner is chosen based on the mentor’s taste. There’s no perfect formula, but here’s how to stand out:

  • Upload before the deadline.

  • Make sure you send in the right track (you’d be surprised).

  • Keep all key instruments active, especially the lead vocal.

  • Respect the original tempo, key, and vibe.

  • Focus on balance, clarity, and emotion, not loudness.

  • Check your submission for accuracy before the deadline.

After submitting, log your entry details to ensure your participation is successful.

And most importantly: have fun. Every contest is a chance to push your skills and hear how your mix stacks up against others worldwide.
