Shaping Frequencies
EQ allows us to shape tone, correct problems, and help sounds coexist within a mix. This lesson explores the controls found on most equalizers and how frequency, gain, Q, filter type, and slope affect what we hear.
About this class
What you’ll learnAfter completing this lesson, students should be able to identify the main parameters of an equalizer, describe the changes they create, and choose an appropriate EQ shape for specific purposes.
Learning prompts
- Fab explains that there are many types of EQ, but they all essentially do the same thing. What does he mean by this? Which type of EQ does he recommend using when first learning how to equalize?
- What are the main controls found on most EQ plugins? How do these controls work together to help engineers make specific mix decisions?
- What are the different types of EQ curves, and why might you choose one over another? How do filters help us shape sound?
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of using fixed EQs (e.g., Neve 1073 or Pultec)?
- Why might two EQs sound slightly different even when the same frequency, gain, and Q settings are used?
