Formed in 2007, the Revivalists started an eight-year trek to the release of their record "Men Amongst Monsters", which landed them on Rolling Stone's list of "10 Bands You Need to Know".
Ten years after forming, their single "Wish I Knew You" reached #1 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart and was certified Platinum by the R.I.A.A.
In this Puremix exclusive, Vance Powell revisits the multitrack and creates a fresh mix on his SSL console, breaking down every mix decision he makes while telling stories from the original production and mix.
See how Vance Powell:
Listens to the track to refamiliarize himself with the multitrack
Begins with the rhythm section of the mix to get a solid foundation
Patches in his Distressors across the kick and snare tracks
Adds a snare drum sample
Adds an Unfairchild as a parallel drum compressor
Adds the steel guitar and explains the importance of it's role in the band
Adds movement to the organ using the Strymon Volante pedal
Adds a Rat Pedal and Boss DM-100 Delay to the snare to create depth and rhythmic ambience
Adds his Strymon El Capistan delays to the lead vocal and sends them to the reverb
Explains his Burl converter I/O setup
Compresses the background vocal bus using an 1176 Rev A and
Fabfilter Multiband Compressor
Adds the B.A.S.E. Spatializer to the keyboard and background vocal loop
Inserts the intro edit they did to the original mix
Adds his two Bricasti M7 reverb units to the mix on various elements
Auditions the SSL bus compressor in addition to the API 2500 across the mix bus
Does passes of automation on his SSL console
Adds a transient designer parallel bus to the snare to extend the length
Creates a vocal delay throw with his Moog analog delays feeding a PCM42 reverb
Reviews the mix at low volume before sending it off to the band and does final tweaks
Experiments with adding the Burl BAD1M transformers to the print

Another great tutorial by Vance and Mike. I appreciate the reflection at the end on why decisions were made back then vs now.

I definitely prefer the new mix to the old. The panning feels better to me but overall it just has a better balance between left / right, a fullness to the low end and a more lush ambiance and cohesiveness. Adding the length to the kick and snare becomes an obvious win when he is A/B ing them. Always a pleasure to watch Vance work and try to steal as much as possible that I can use in my own work. I sat down to watch for a bit and ended up watching all 6 episodes in succession. Well done.
