Combining acoustic & electronic drums
48 min • 2015
Modern music productions often blend the rich and natural sound of acoustic drums with the punch and drive of drum machines and samples.
In this video Ben Lindell will show you how to combine and shape these two different but complimentary sources to create the foundation of a rhythm section that you can use in any genre you will work on.
You will learn how to analyze and improve the phase relationship between bass drums, make snares pop out of the mix and get a a fatter, vibey sound, while at the same time using the natural overheads and room sounds to add depth and dimension to the groove.
All these aspects combined will give you a skill set to produce your next unique, refined and professional drum sound.

This was a very good tutorial. I real liked how you eq’d everything to get the sound and balance you wanted without smashing everything with a compressor. I enjoyed the balance between the electronic drums and the acoustic kit. I certainly wished they recorded a better drum kit and better cymbals but with Ben’s Knowledge and experience he made everything work quite well to compliment the song.

Great tutorial! Quick question: did you tie the live drums to the grid?

Quite possibly one of the most important and enjoyable videos on this site. Who wouldn't want a guy like Ben steering a mix!! Excellent tutorial with priceless detail fixes

@Producerpaul Eagle Eyes :) You're correct we had to use footage from a different recording session than the stems I used in the track. A little Hollywood magic had to go into this one.

Arek, you are correct, that is not a D-112. The D-112,is on the tom. I just think he got confused, it happens. Interesting tutorial though.

I'm like 99% sure that kick in mic showed is an Audix D6 not AKG D112 :P
And while most of those courses here say about conservative levels, those are hot as hell :P
